![]() Between the machinations of the disciples of black gods and good old corporate skullduggery, it’s winding up to be of a hell of a summer vacation for the lads. Now a bloodthirsty cult and an equally vicious rival firm suspect the Tooms boys know something and will spare no expense, nor innocent life, to get their claws on them. Consider also those long, cruel winters at the Mountain Leopard boarding school for assassins in the Himalayas, or that Dad may be a supervillain, while an uncle occasionally slaughters his nephews and nieces for sport and the space flight research division of Sword Enterprises “accidentally” sent a probe through a wormhole into outer darkness and contacted an alien god. Alas, life is complicated in mid-1950s USA when you’re child heirs to the throne of Sword Enterprises, a corporation that has enshrined Machiavelli’s The Prince as its operating manual and whose patriarch believes, Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds, would be a swell company logo. ![]() Brothers Macbeth and Drederick Tooms should have it made as fair-haired scions of an impossibly rich and powerful family of industrialists. ![]()

![]() ![]() And her accidental discovery in a long forgotten cavern might just grant her a way to claim the stars. Spensa is still determined to fly-even if it means she must be as resilient in the face of long odds as humanity itself has had to be against the alien threat. But her father’s legacy stands in the way-he was a pilot who was killed for desertion years ago, branding Spensa the daughter of a coward, and making her chances of attending flight school slim to none. Ever since she was a little girl, Spensa has dreamed of soaring skyward and proving her bravery. Pilots are the heroes of what’s left of humanity, and becoming a pilot is Spensa’s dream. ![]() ![]() Spensa’s world has been under alien attack for decades. From Brandon Sanderson, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Reckoners series, the Stormlight Archive, and the internationally bestselling Mistborn series, comes the first book in an epic new series about a girl who dreams of becoming a pilot in a dangerous world at war with an alien race called the Krell. ![]() ![]() ![]() |t Preface - |t Introduction : at the edge of poverty - |g ch. |a Includes bibliographical references and index. |a The working poor : |b invisible in America / |c David K. It is a book that stands to make a difference. This impassioned book not only dissects the problems, but makes pointed, informed recommendations for change. ![]() We encounter them every day, for they do jobs essential to the American economy. Shipler exposes the interlocking problems by taking us into the sorrowful, infuriating, courageous lives of the poor-white and black, Asian and Latino, citizens and immigrants. But their version of the American Dream is a nightmare: low-paying, dead-end jobs the profound failure of government to improve upon decaying housing, health care, and education the failure of families to break the patterns of child abuse and substance abuse. Shipler makes clear in this powerful, humane study, the invisible poor are engaged in the activity most respected in American ideology-hard, honest work. "This is clearly one of those seminal books that every American should read and read now." - The New York Times Book Review As David K. ![]() From the author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning Arab and Jew, an intimate portrait unfolds of working American families struggling against insurmountable odds to escape poverty. ![]() ![]() ![]() But too often, biases show up on the page and do no justice to Black children's brilliance and lives. Sometimes, white children's book authors portray Black children with respect and celebration (such as Ezra Jack Keats, in my opinion). Here's a great example of why #ownvoices stories are so crucial. As a non-Black person of color, I wanted to be sure that my dismay wasn't misguided - but found that another reviewer also found this book offensive. The implication that Black girls' natural hair is inherently "a mess" is racist and deeply damaging it regurgitates dominant cultural norms that devalues Black people's bodies and pressures them to conform to white standards of beauty. ![]() The part that stands out to me as particularly hard to read is the spread that begins, "Even when I look a mess." and depicts the young girl in bed with her hair caricatured into what looks like an afro (the hairstyle shown in this illustration is a marked difference from the dreadlocks that the main character was wearing before). I could tell right away that this book's illustrator was white, because of his unfortunate portrayal of a Black child. ![]() ![]() One could easily argue that the central thesis of this book is the idea that "faith begins precisely where reason ends." ![]() ![]() Haha, boy do i get ahead of myself sometimes! silly me! yes, that is what i say! i say, "silly me!" and i sit in the bathtub at night and i make tiny little cuts into the backs of my thighs and the bottom of my feet! the pain let's me know i am alive! anywho! today's book is a classic by the greatly pathetic soren kierkegaard, entitled "fear and trembling: who let the dogs out?" ok let's go! ![]() You don't even read this stuff anymore, do you?! i wouldn't if i were you! but that's the difference between me and you! you have no life, are pathetic, sit in front of your computer all day stalking your peers on various social networking sites, while i go on constantly mocking your efforts through half jest and utter disregard for the values you hold dear to your heart! ![]() ![]() ![]() Ordinary art means something like: all art not made by Mozart. Art & Fear: Observations On the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking My book highlights: The authors are two friends who worked on this book over a period of seven years, both of them artists themselves, and you can tell that they have the wisdom that comes from both having lived an artists life, and discussing it with fellow artists. In a nutshell review: This book helped me understand my own creative process and struggles more clearly. ![]() ![]() In fact, this is a great book to listen to while you’re working, or walking, or working out. I got the Kindle version with Audible narration, and both are great. If you ever felt alone or misunderstood when it comes to your creative impulses, this will book will almost be like the hug of an understanding old friend. If you’re an artist and struggle with the creative process- and isn’t that what art essentially is? An eternal struggle with the creative process-then this is a fantastic book. ![]() ![]() The prescient, page-turning account of a journey in Silicon Valley: a defining memoir of our digital age "A definitive document of a world in transition: I won't be alone in returning to Uncanny Valley for clarity and consolation for many years to come." ?Jia Tolentino, author of Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion ![]() One of Vogue's 22 Books to Read This Winter, The Washington Post's 10 Books to Read in January, ELLE's 12 Best Books to Read in 2020, The New York Times's 12 Books to Read in January, Esquire's 15 Best Winter Books, Paste's 10 Most Anticipated Nonfiction Books of 2020, and Entertainment Weekly's 50 Most Anticipated Books of 2020. ![]() A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice and a January 2020 IndieNext Pick. ![]() ![]() ![]() (directors: Elan Dassani/Rajeev Dassani screenwriter: Madhuri Shekar/based on the Audio Play by Madhuri Shekar cinematographer: Yaron Levy editor: Kristina Hamilton-Grobler music: Ronit Kirchman cast: Sarita Choudhury (Usha), Sunita Mari (Pallayi), Bernard White (Krishnan), Omar Maskati (Sandeep Patel), Rachel Cora Wood (Kelly), Anjali Bhimani (Radhika), Rachel Cora Wood (Kelly), Ramesh Reddy (Malik), Lena Clark (Sononia), Satya Polisetti (Houston Guy), Ashish Thapliyal (Amit), Natosha Durr (Barista), Kamran Shaikh (Guruji), Kim Patel (Bhayna) Runtime: 90 MPAA Rating: NR producers: Nina Arand Aujla/Ian Watermeier Amazon Studios/Blumhouse Television/Purple Pebble Pictures 2020) USA-in English & Hindi, with English subtitles if necessary)Įvil Eye is based on the Audio Play by Madhuri Shekar. ![]() ![]() To find the truth he’ll need to rely on the family he despises, and on the kindness of the most gorgeous man he’s ever seen.
